The M136 AT4 is man-portable, 84-mm unguided, single-shot recoilless smoothbore weapon and is fired from the right shoulder only. Since the AT4 can only be fired once, it is considered to be ammunition and not an actual weapon. The AT4 is designed to destroy armored vehicles or fortified positions. The M136 AT4's warhead has excellent penetration ability and lethal after-armor effects. The extremely destructive, 440 gram shaped-charge explosive penetrates more than 14 inches of armor. Marines will become familiar with the AT4 while attending the School of Infantry (SOI). The number of Marines carrying the AT4 will vary depending on the platoon/squad, what their mission is, and what they expect they could be facing.
